The Ditch at Broughall

The ditch at Broughall yielded its first sighting of an adult nesting vole. It's a hopeless site for taking photos there because the vegetation's so dense, so the vole pictured here is from Edgeley Road. But I have no doubt there's a big population in the stream that crosses the bridleway.

So lovely (as always)to see your pictures. I did a survey on a new stretch of river yesterday and although there were signs I saw no voles, only a kingfisher (which was lovely) so I am feeling Vole Withdrawal Symptoms :-)

In my experience it's quite rare to see a vole during a survey as you tend to make too much noise parting the grass and rooting around for field signs. But it's great you found signs. Go back there and sit quietly for an evening.

I did that afterwards for over an hour :-(

Pleased to say that my Vole Withdrawal Symptoms - 3 weeks where the only 'sighting' was some twitching vegetation - have been alleviated by a couple of brief but charming glimpses in the last 3 days ! I feel that our small colony here in central Cambridge may be 'hanging on' rather than 'thriving' - however some Internet searches do indicate that there has been a water vole presence on this particular college boundary ditch for many years :-)
