This water vole knows I'm watching, I think - she keeps raising her head and sniffing the air. (I'm assuming it's a female because this is probably her latrine she's standing on.)

Interestingly, field voles deliberately poo on their feed stations. You don't see it so much with water voles, but as you say, they're not over-fussy. Then again, rabbits go as far as re-ingesting their poo. The fact they're herbivores probably makes it more acceptable than if they were carnivores!
This blog charts the fortunes of water voles in and around the Whitchurch area, North Shropshire. Water voles are one of the UK's most threatened mammals, extinct in many counties, and so it's vital they receive as much monitoring and protection as there is going. Here in Whitchurch we're lucky enough to have them right in the middle of town - how cool is that?
