Numbers were definitely down this year - only 29 birds in all, and 9 of those were house sparrows. Other species recorded: blue tit, long-tailed tit, coal tit, robin, wren, blackbird, woodpigeon, jackdaw. No finches, no starlings and no dunnocks, which is unusual. I wonder if other birdwatchers have found this kind of a dip?

Fabulous Amphibians to open 2016!

Do check underneath piles of garden rubbish if you're moving them at this time of year. Some little animals use them to over-winter in.

Please Check your Bonfires Before Lighting Them!

Amphibians such as the GCN and the baby smooth newts above, as well as small mammals and reptiles, are looking for piles of logs in which to hibernate. If you're building a bonfire, don't do it more than a day or two in advance, and if it's been up a while, do try shifting it a few feet so that any animals who've taken refuge there have a chance to escape.
