Took the boys for a walk in the fields round Ash this afternoon, and found this chap slap bang in the middle of a field. In my ignorance, I didn't know great diving beetles could fly. I gather they're fearsome creatures, if you're tadpole-sized.

Round a pond further on I saw this nibbled grass; looks like water vole activity to me. Click on the picture to enlarge and see in detail the classic 45% cut at the ends of the stalks.
