What are the post nuptial arrangements for Mr & Mrs Vole? Does the bloke hang around and help decorate the nursery? Or does he go looking for wife number two and leave the domestic stuff to the mum to be?
I’ve only just twigged vole is an anagram of love - someone has to be last!
According to S R Ryder, in the excellent Sunday Times 'Animals of Britain' series, the male does stick by the female and help sort out a nesting chamber.
Whether they mate for life, though, I don't know. A vole only survives through one or two summers, so it wouldn't be that long-term a commitment!
This blog charts the fortunes of water voles in and around the Whitchurch area, North Shropshire. Water voles are one of the UK's most threatened mammals, extinct in many counties, and so it's vital they receive as much monitoring and protection as there is going. Here in Whitchurch we're lucky enough to have them right in the middle of town - how cool is that?

Further to Dave's post, Water Vole ia an anagram of "A Wet Lover", quite appropriate given the time of year and their habitat !!!
Marvellous!
