Two voles tonight, at Yockings Gate. Good to see after the floods!

I can see the little mini-brown-torpedo making its way across the brook. All the water's up here but I think they have it much much worse in the south of the county.
The brook is still high at the end of our garden. Normally we have twelve ducks quacking for food in the early hours ..... We have only seen four waiting for food since the brook flooded. No signs of watervoles at all as yet.... early days.....
This blog charts the fortunes of water voles in and around the Whitchurch area, North Shropshire. Water voles are one of the UK's most threatened mammals, extinct in many counties, and so it's vital they receive as much monitoring and protection as there is going. Here in Whitchurch we're lucky enough to have them right in the middle of town - how cool is that?

The Staggs Brook is pretty high-sided for most of its length; adult voles will just climb to the top of the banks out of the way of rising water.
