Hi Kate, Fantastic water vole info. I have lots of ID queries as I found what I thought was a water vole latrine but it is on top of a pile of cut food, which I wasn't sure voles did? I do have a picture I can email you if you'd like
Droppings on top of cut food are more likely to be field vole, but water voles also sometimes do this. It's down to scale, really: field vole droppings are tiny, like grains of rice, whereas water vole pellets are slightly bigger than tic tac sized. Or, if you have guinea pigs, not unlike their droppings. If you want to email me - and I'd like to see your photos - google Kate Long and use the email address from my website.
This blog charts the fortunes of water voles in and around the Whitchurch area, North Shropshire. Water voles are one of the UK's most threatened mammals, extinct in many counties, and so it's vital they receive as much monitoring and protection as there is going. Here in Whitchurch we're lucky enough to have them right in the middle of town - how cool is that?

Yes, my sons reported this when they came back from town. It's good to see!
