These photos, for all they're technically flawed, go some way to showing the distinctive shape of a water vole - the rounded ends, the small, neat ears - and the size - that's a litre bottle in the background of the second shot.
You often see them apparently staring directly at you, and it's because they're short-sighted so they're trying to locate the sound you made. If you're quiet and still (and don't wear heavy perfume/aftershave) you can stand quite near a water vole.
This blog charts the fortunes of water voles in and around the Whitchurch area, North Shropshire. Water voles are one of the UK's most threatened mammals, extinct in many counties, and so it's vital they receive as much monitoring and protection as there is going. Here in Whitchurch we're lucky enough to have them right in the middle of town - how cool is that?
